Dental checkups are a very important part of your oral health. It is during these checkups that our team here at Alluvial can detect any issues that might be developing within your teeth, gums, mouth and throat. It is always much easier to treat and manage dental issues when caught early than to let them develop into bigger problems.
This is why dental checkups are crucial. On average, dental checkups should be done every 6 months. In the case that you have an underlying dental problem that needs more frequent monitoring, our team will create a different schedule to ensure that we keep a close eye on you. Feel free to reach out to learn how we can help you best!
What Should You Expect During a Dental Checkup?
Dental checkups are composed of a few different parts. All of these parts together enable our dentists to remove unwanted tartar and plaque from the teeth as well as to have a close look at the current well-being of your entire mouth and throat. These parts are as follows:
Professional Teeth Cleaning
We always encourage you to brush and floss your teeth twice daily to keep a healthy smile. Having said that, brushing and flossing do not always remove all the plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth. This is where professional teeth cleaning comes in.
When our team performs a professional teeth cleaning, we are able to remove plaque and tartar buildup from all the places that the toothbrush and floss were not able to get into. We use a process called “scaling” to do this. Scaling takes place with a special tool that scrapes the areas below the gumline. You can expect your mouth to feel lighter and fresher afterwards since it will be free of tartar.
The second step to the professional teeth cleaning is to polish and floss the teeth. Polishing and flossing removes surface stains and anything that is left in-between the teeth. As you might imagine, going more than six months without a professional cleaning can be detrimental to your teeth since they will accumulate a lot of unnecessary tartar and plaque.
In-Depth Oral Examination
A second equally important part of your routine dental checkup is an in-depth oral examination. Our dentists take their time here to look through each of your teeth, gum, mouth, and neck for signs of problems. Some of the problems that can be detected through the in-depth oral exam are cavities and other diseases.

Oral X-Ray
Not all dental problems are visible to the dentists’ eyes. This is why our team will take oral x-rays during your dental checkup. This allows us to take a closer look at the overall health of your mouth and throat. X-rays are a great tool for our team to detect serious problems that might be arising such as decay in-between teeth, tumours, abscesses, cysts, impacted teeth, and even damage to jawbones. The goal is to detect these problems early so that we can treat them before they escalate.
Bi-annual dental checkups are an imperative part of your oral health. We recommend that you visit our office for your checkups every 6 months. This allows us to remove tartar and plaque but also to keep a close look at your overall health. Detecting problems early is crucial in ensuring that we can treat and manage them. If you are due for your bi-annual visit, please contact our office to book an appointment.
We also wanted to add that if you have any pains, aches, or any other symptoms of disease, please do not wait until your bi-annual appointment. Please contact our office immediately so that we can take a close look at your situation.
Our team is equipped to assist you with any concerns you might have. Book your visit for your upcoming cleaning with us and bring any questions you might have with regards to your dental care our way. Alternatively, feel free to submit a photo of your teeth to get a detailed quote before you come in!
